During any free time-rest!
Whether your baby or toddler is taking a short nap or your child is playing quietly for a while, take a short break. This can be for 5 minutes to yourself, depending on how much time you have. Any time to yourself as a parent is so valuable, no matter how short that time is
Resting doesn’t mean you have to nap. If you don’t have time for this then even lying or sitting down for a few minutes can be enough to recharge. Just take a moment with a hot drink to take a well-deserved breather
Take yourself away for a moment if you need to
Similar to taking a break but for during those not-so-quiet-times. I would do this during almost-impossible sleepless nights when my daughter was a newborn. Make sure your baby is in a safe space (like their cot) and take yourself out of the room for a minute or less, take a few deep breaths then go back in. You’ll be amazed at how beneficial a quick deep breathing exercise can be to get yourself together in highly stressful moments
Remember to reach out
You’re not alone! Even if you’re a single parent, have limited support, etc. there are always helplines and support networks to help you out, even for a one-off chat to cheer you up. Contact your healthcare provide for mental health support specifically for parents. This doesn’t have to be just for severe or moderate mental health difficulties or diagnosed conditions; this includes simply feeling isolated, lonely, stressed or overwhelmed
