Favourite books for toddlers and preschoolers (Toddler-approved!)

Reading is a wonderful activity for you to enjoy with your toddler and pre-schooler. Books at this age are when they learn important lessons about the real world in a way that is relatable and engaging to them. Keep reading for a list of books my toddler and I have been enjoying. All toddler-approved!

Elmer books

Elmer series

Elmer is a classic loved by many. There are several books of this funny colourful elephant and his tales of adventures with him and his silly friends. Elmer is different from the other elephants with his rainbow skin, teaching kids that different is positively unique and beautiful

First words books

First words books

This is book we own and is great for teaching young toddlers first words to practise their speech and language development. There are several real-world categories your toddler can relate to such as clothes they wear, foods they eat and toys they play with. However, I’m not solely recommending this First words book as I think any multiple category book for teaching first words is an essential educational tool for the early years.

*If your talkative pre-schooler seems a little too old for learning basic words, they could still be useful with learning to read and spell out simple words!

Charlie and Lola books

Charlie and Lola series

I loved this series as a child! It’s a book series first and a popular TV show second. The series is British so I’m not sure about it’s availability in other countries but it should be available of Amazon for you and your child to try out and enjoy

The series follows Lola and her older brother Charlie as they navigate their way through life with relatable topics for small children. There’s the original books that include helping kids to learn to like vegetables and encouraging them to not be nervous for starting school, all through the perspective of little Lola (with her big brother Charlie’s help)

Owl babies

This is such a wholesome book of fun repetition small children will love from the three baby Owls: Sarah, Percy and Bill as they wait for their owl Mother

Shirley Hughes books

The various classic stories from this wonderful author are beautiful stories that are still loved today. There are many characters with their stories including Alfie and Annie-Rose

The gruffalo books

A well-known and loved story with a silly twist as the brave little mouse ventures his way through the forest and meets a new face along the way.

(I also recommend the gruffalo’s child!)

The wonky donkey books

This is such a silly, hilarious book it will have parents laughing too! The wonky donkey is a funny book of rhymes that will have you and your child giggling all the way through. There’s also The dinky donkey and The grinny granny donkey

Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed this list of books for toddlers and pre-schoolers and got some inspiration for what to read to your child next. Comment down below your favourites as well as any other books I may have missed out

For a very young toddler, they’ll still enjoy this list of books for babies!
